A bass that lands on the kick's phase
Nebula Bass renders each note ahead of time and anchors its fundamental to a chosen phase per note, after the whole chain. Linked to Nebula Kick, it reads the kick's published phase so every note starts where the kick's tail ends.
Also in Nebula Complete and All Access.
Highlights
What sets it apart
Per-note phase anchor
The start phase is derived for each note from the handoff and the pitch envelope, and checked at each note's own fundamental. The sub stays mono and is never distorted.
Linked to Nebula Kick
Turn on LINK and Bass reads Kick's published tail over Nebula Link. The panel says LINKED, LINK HELD or NO KICK, and a beat view draws the kick's tail and the bass notes at the seam.
Import a bass
IMPORT BASS takes a reference one-shot and rebuilds the whole voicing from it, frame by frame, so every panel is adjusted to match.
Features
Everything in Nebula Bass
Sound
- Two oscillators: saw, square, triangle, sine or pulse
- Mono sub layer, never distorted
- Attack layer for the note's transient
- Filter: state-variable or transistor-ladder style
- EQ with per-note phase compensation
- Drive with an asymmetry control
Groove
- Pocket: a note-relative gate around the kick
- Kick duck without a kick plugin, read from the host's transport
- Morph axis for brightness
Workflow
- Doctor with five findings, each remedy verified by rendering first
- Link beat view: one beat with the kick's tail and the bass notes
- Resizable window and 16 colour themes
Nebula Link
Works with the rest of the range
It reads the handoff contract Nebula Kick publishes in the Nebula Link v1 region, on a 10 Hz message-thread timer. When the kick changes, the kick's terminal phase becomes the bass's handoff phase and the notes re-render.
Measured
What the tests show
- Per-note anchoring against phase retrigger: worst case +6.60 dB, note-to-note spread reduced from 9.04 to 2.26 dB
- Anchor on a linked kick's published phase, 25 notes x 3 tempos: 0.0038 deg
- Anchor through the EQ: 0.028 deg, removing 68.8 deg of per-note rotation
- Pocket head overlap at 128, 145 and 174 BPM: 0.000 ms
- pluginval strictness 10 SUCCESS on AU (25 test groups) and VST3; auval -strict pass; rt-check pass
- Latest gate in the decision log: Core 757 of 758 checks, the one failure being the live Link channel test
Questions
Nebula Bass FAQ
Do I need Nebula Kick?
No. Without a linked kick, notes use the phase set in the patch, and the kick duck works from the host's transport. Linking to Nebula Kick adds the kick's exact tail phase.
Does it take a sidechain input?
Not by default. The sidechain bus is off because declaring it breaks AU playback in Logic.
Can it copy a bass I already have?
Yes. IMPORT BASS rebuilds the sound from a reference one-shot. On three test references the replicas correlated 0.9943 to 0.9992 with the originals.
Is it finished?
It is at version 0.1.0. The decision log lists open release items: the JUCE licence tier, Developer ID signing and the activation model.
What does it need?
macOS 11 or later, on Apple silicon or Intel. It loads as AU or VST3 in Logic, Ableton Live, Bitwig, Cubase, FL Studio, Reaper and Nebula DAW.
